The Caper & Scotian Jake Beanies

The Caper & Scotian Jake Beanies

Introducing The Caper Jake & The Scotian Jake Beanies

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to meet two winter essentials inspired by my love for Nova Scotia: The Caper Jake and The Scotian Jake beanies. These aren’t just hats—they’re a celebration of heritage, warmth, and pride.

The Inspiration

If you’re into knitting or crochet and you’re not already following Kayla at Captivating Crochet, you’re missing out. Her patterns are stunning, easy to follow, and perfect for market prep. When I saw her tester call for the Jake Beanie, I knew I had to grab it. This pattern is a must-have for any maker!

But for me, Jake wasn’t just a pattern—it was an opportunity to showcase my Nova Scotian pride. Ever since moving back home, I’ve felt more connected to my roots. Here in Nova Scotia, we’re fiercely proud of where we come from, and our winters are a big part of who we are. (If you’ve lived through White Juan, you know exactly what I mean!)

I wanted to design something that not only kept us cozy but also celebrated the beauty and resilience of this place. And so, The Caper Jake and The Scotian Jake were born.

The Design Process

Yarn Selection

For color combinations, I always turn to Two of Wands’ collaborations with Lion Brand Yarn. These lines are incredible for both quality and palette:

  • Hue & Me: A bulky-weight wool/acrylic blend available in 36 stunning colors.
  • Color Theory: A worsted-weight, 100% acrylic yarn available in 18 versatile shades.

These yarns bring the perfect balance of warmth and style to my beanies.

Custom Patches

The patches are the heart of these beanies. I worked with Diane at Brick Bubble, who’s been my go-to for custom business tags for years. She brought my vision to life with gorgeous Cape Breton and Nova Scotia outlines. These patches are perfection!

Silk Tags

Finding the right finishing touch for these beanies was a challenge. I didn’t want to use my usual wrap-around tags, as they didn’t complement the central patch design. Instead, I discovered Custom Tag Studio on Etsy, a shop based in Bulgaria. Their silk tags peek out from the side of the beanie, giving it a polished, high-end look. Think Roots or North Face vibes—exactly what I was aiming for.
